Cycle syncing — adjusting your workouts, diet, work schedule, and social commitments to your menstrual cycle phases — has become a popular wellness concept. But how much of it is grounded in evidence, and how much is pattern-matching dressed up as optimisation?
What cycle syncing is
Cycle syncing is the practice of aligning lifestyle choices with the four phases of the menstrual cycle: menstrual, follicular, ovulatory, and luteal. The premise is that hormonal fluctuations across the cycle influence energy, strength, cognitive performance, mood, and recovery — so working with those patterns rather than against them may improve wellbeing and performance.

The honest answer is: some of the underlying biology is real, but the specific prescriptions often outrun the research.

- Progesterone in the luteal phase raises core body temperature, increases metabolic rate modestly, and can reduce exercise tolerance in some individuals.

What is less established: specific dietary protocols tied to cycle phases, the claim that cycle syncing measurably improves fertility or hormonal balance, and the degree to which individual variation (which is enormous) undermines any universal prescription.

This is where the evidence base is most developed. Research suggests that some people may benefit from:
- Menstrual phase (days 1–5): Lower intensity movement — walking, yoga, or restorative exercise. Low oestrogen and progesterone, plus prostaglandin-driven cramping, often make high-intensity training feel harder.
- Follicular phase (days 6–13): Rising oestrogen supports strength training, HIIT, and new learning. Many people notice naturally higher motivation and energy in this phase.

Specific dietary protocols tied to cycle phases have much weaker evidence behind them. What is less controversial:
- Iron-rich foods during and after menstruation can help replenish losses from bleeding.
- Magnesium may reduce cramp severity for some people — research on this is reasonably consistent.
- Complex carbohydrates in the luteal phase may help stabilise mood by supporting serotonin production via tryptophan availability.
- Reducing salt, alcohol, and caffeine in the late luteal phase can help manage bloating and sleep disruption for many people.

The most defensible version of cycle syncing is not following a prescribed protocol — it's using tracking to discover your own personal patterns and then responding to them.
